We have had widespread support from a number of local campaigning groups. On the 15th of April we presented the December ’14 petition to Tower Hamlets Council. The petition was very successful, receiving cross party support.
The council debated our petition for almost an hour, and our ward councillor (Gulam Robbani) raised an emergency motion through which the council voted unanimously to support our campaign against demolition. There seemed to be widespread disillusion with East End Homes across the council.
In addition to the full council support we have so far held meetings with and gained the support of our Ward Councillor Gulam Robbani and Lead member for Housing, Councillor Rabina Khan, Leader of Tower Hamlets Labour Group Councillor Rachael Saunders, and Rushanara Ali, the last MP for the area who is standing for re-election.
At a recent hustings event, Bethnal Green & Bow general election candidates Glyn Robbins, Alistair Polson, Teena Lashmore and Matt Smith have also pledged to do what they can to help should they be elected and Rushanara Ali re-affirmed her support.
In addition to a number of other London based social housing campaigns, the following local groups have also pledged their support for our campaign:
- The Spitalfields Trust
- EastEnd Preservation Society
- Tower Hamlets Federation of TRAs
- Spitalfields Neighbourhood Planning Forum
Local resident, the Gentle Author from the Spitalfields Life blog has also supported us.
